How does it compare to its sibling, the Mazda MX-5?

The 124 Spider's body is adapted from the Mazda MX-5, and both are actually made in the same factory. So how do they differ?
Styling - The first first difference you'll notice is the 124's exterior, which received a great deal of Italian-designed flair to retain that classic roadster look.
Power and efficiency - Both have similar fuel economy ratings, but the Fiat 124 Spider offers slightly better highway efficiency due to its engine size and turbocharger.
Capacity - The FIAT 124 is slightly longer than the MX-5, which adds a cubic foot in both passenger and cargo volume. In small-capacity sports cars, every inch counts!

Luxury - The interiors in both are largely the identical, however the FIAT uses a much higher quality leather.

In the Media

"As a basis for a cheap sports car, you couldn't choose much better."
- BBC Top Gear

"The 124 Spider sports an exclusive turbocharged Fiat engine, unique suspension tuning, and a more upscale interior. It's a bit more relaxed than the Miata, but it still provides thrills on a twisty road-and the same top-down, wind-in-your-hair feeling of freedom."
- Car and Driver

"The Mazda makes 151 lb.-ft. at 4,000 rpm, while the Fiat makes a strong 184 lb.-ft. at a much lower 2,500 rpm. Quite simply, the 124 has much more mid-range punch than the MX-5, and feels much faster when squirting around in traffic."
- driving.ca

"In a six-way sports car comparison, the 2017 Fiat Spider Abarth topped the BMW M2, Chevrolet Camaro (V-6), Ford Focus RS, Porsche 718 Boxster S, and the Toyota 86 because it was the most fun car to drive in the group. "
- Motor Trend

"The Fiat 124 Spider shares its underpinnings with the Mazda MX-5 Miata, but the Lusso trim targets a more luxurious experience."
- CNBC

"Fiat's link-up with Mazda has produced a retro model of excitement and beauty"
- Independent

"It replaces the Mazda's 2.0-liter, 155-hp, 148 lb-ft, nonturbo four-cylinder, which is one of the best small engines on the market-linear, responsive, torquey for its size, and efficient."
- Road and Track

"The extra torque from the 1.4L is immediately present and appreciated. The motor, transmission, and chassis work in harmony, exchanging playful banter back and forth as you rev match downshift and twist the wheel through the bends on country roads."
- Canadian Auto Review
